Product Ideation is great fun. The sessions to come up with ideas for new products and what you believe the next big thing will be are very enjoyable. Whilst AI usage will continue to grow there is still space for the traditional techniques.
Stimulus
All of those hours you may have spent crafting mood boards for product stimulus, finding pictures to show what you need people to see to encourage creativity, searching through instagram posts, magazines, food blogs. AI can definitely speed this up. Platforms such as Ideagram Helping people become more creative. (ideogram.ai) and Bing Image creator Image Creator from Microsoft Designer (bing.com) can both help jumpstart your images for free. There are other paid for platforms such as Midjourney to create images.
What is feasible?
Currently AI hasn't been round your factory to know what's possible with the machines tooling and people you have available. The feasibility and impact still needs to be reviewed by real people who understand your business, how easy it is to deliver and the potential any new products can have. Easy versus hard to implement, high vs low impact are still questions to be worked through with key stakeholders.
Honing names and descriptions
AI platforms such as ChatGPT can assist with creating more detail with your ideas. Useful prompts could include "I am making a new [insert type of product] targeting [insert target audience] it is packaged in [describe type of packaging] and typically found in [insert store location]. This is the list of likely ingredients in order of quantity they will be found in the product [insert ingredients]. Can you generate some names and subtitles of the new product?"
Don't take the fun out of if
Bringing people together to ideate has value beyond the ideas generated. You could ask AI for ideas about products but that doesn't help a whole team be invested in a new idea and be on the journey with you to develop and launch it. Ideation sessions also a key time to bring people together offering a form of team building. They can include fun ice breakers and offer the opportunity to work together in different ways.
